This lot comes from Victor Calderon of Finca El Tambor. Victor Calderon grows 100 hectares of coffee on land that was once devoted—in addition to coffee—to cattle ranching and mining in the Palencia municipality, 17 miles east of Guatemala City. The farm takes its name from a drumming sound that once emanated from the ground, “like a heartbeat,” it is said. The sound was prevalent in parts of the farm until the 1950’s and likely due to an underground waterfall that was eventually disturbed. Coffee on Finca El Tambor grows under shade from pine, avocado, and cinnamon trees. Although there are no rivers at 6000 feet, the region does receive over 50 inches of rain during the rainy season (May-December). Victor captures and stores as much as possible for milling.
